Memphis International Records is set to locally release Rise, an album that will serve as a fundraiser for MusiCares. Rise will be released on a rush basis and will be sold only in Memphis through participating outlets.
With thematically related tracks from Big Star, Jimmy Davis, Jim Dickinson, Harmonica Frank Floyd, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Louise Hoffsten, The Iguanas, Rob Jungklas, Red Stick Ramblers and Sid Selvidge, the collection will be available as a limited edition with 100% of the gross proceeds to be donated to MusicCares. Established in 1989 by The Recording Academy, MusiCares has been helping people across the country cope with personal, medical and financial hardships. MusiCares provides totally confidential crisis intervention, health care referrals and financial assistance. The MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund represents a $1 Million dollar commitment of charitable funds to be distributed to musicians and other music industry people directly affected by this disaster.
“Because of the kinship between Memphis and New Orleans and the fact that so many members of the New Orleans and Gulf Coast music community have found their way to Memphis, we thought we'd be proactive and, strictly on a local level, get an album out to help the cause,” notes Memphis International's David Less. Less produced the album and, together with partner Bob Merlis, contacted numerous artists, labels and music publishers in an effort to get Rise out as quickly as possible. Participants donated production, pressing, master use license and publishing on a gratis basis. Beyond Memphis International, labels involved in the project include Ardent, Artemis, Humongous, Madjack, Peabody and Yep Rock. Participating music publishers include Ardent Music, Blowout Music, BMG Scandinavia, Her Smile Music, Irish Bend Music, Jimmy Daddy's Music, Koala Music and Peer International. Art direction services by Brook Barnett Design as well as CD replication by Reel Picture were also donated.
The title song for the package is by Louise Hoffsten, a Swedish artist who records for Memphis International. She and Peter Kvint wrote the song last year after the Asian tsunami claimed the lives of many of her countrymen. She noted, “It's sad that the song now relates to two tragedies but I'm happy to do my part to help out by including it in this album.”
